A case of hereditary ataxia accompanying extrapyramidal sign.

Case report was made on hereditary ataxia accompanying extrapyramidal sign in a 35 yrs old female patient. The onset of illnes was at her age of 11 when tremor became apparent in the hands and fingers. She suf-fered thereafter from shaking tremors of the head, the upper extremity and the body trunk. Besides these extrapyramidal sign, she also had both spinal and cerebellar signs, together with nystagmus, bone anomaly, muscular atrophy, reflex anomaly as well as sensory disturbances. Hitherto, extra-pyramidal sign has been, when seen in case of hereditary ataxia, considered as symptom only of a later stage. A survey of the lite-rature along this line, however, has led the authors to conclusion that extrapyramidal sign should be counted as a potentially impo-rtant symptom of hereditary ataxia. It has been also brought forward the possibility that the ataxia accompanying extrapyramidal sign may well be distinguished as a distinct type from the typical cases of Friedreich's and Marie's.
