Abstract

The authors made a statistic observations of 142 cases of epilepsy that were admitted to the 1st Depertment of Surgery in the past four and a half years.

1) They were classified as follows Genuine epilepsy 65.9% Focal e- pilepsy 9.5% Residual epilepsy 2.7% Traumatic epilepsy 9.5% Symptomatic epilepsy 12.2% Ja- cksonian epilepsy 4.0%

2) As to the sex ratio there were twice as many male patients as female patients, and most of them showed symptoms before their 20th year of life.

3) The cause or the precipitating factor that was supposedlly responsible for developing symptoms was mostly trauma to the head.

4) It is thought that hereditary relations in epilepsy are quite small.

5) 20% of the craniotomy cases showed full recovery, those were as follows.

a) Those who had cortical premotor or motor area removed (partial).122 cases

b) Those who had their sources, such as scar tissue, adhesion, removed. 12 cases

c) Those who had lobotomy 3 cases

In traumatic epileptic cases, who had their sources (adhesions or scar tissues or other origins) removed, the complete recovery was 75%. The complete recovery by resecting the cortex in genuine epilepsy was 16%.
