  • Look Inside

Simultaneous recordings were made of the poten-tial changes in the human motor cortex and voluntary muscle movements in epileptic patients.

The motor center of the muscle movement (plantar flexion of the pollex) was identified by electrical stimulation with Rahm's Thyratron,Im-pulse Oseillator.

Blocking of spontaneous activity was observed during the flexion by ordinary monopolar lead with electrode (0.7 mm silver wire) placed on the motor center corresponding to the movement, and initial increment of the potentials and follow-ing suppression of spontaneous activity was obser-ved with bipolar electrodes (two 0.7 mm silver wires were placed at a distance of 2 mm). But by microelectrode (two 0.1 mm manganin) wires insulated by glass capillary) we observed only the increment of the potentials during the flexion and no blocking or suppression of the localized cereb-ral activity was found.

The author concludes from these results that the circumscribed potential changes in the motor cent-ers during the corresponding voluntary movements are not suppression and socalled suppression of the alpha rhythm in human EEG at the time of voluntary movements might be caused by the influence of the surrounding areas.
