Abstract
Objective
This study aimed to establish the actual state of disaster nursing education provided in undergraduate nursing programs at nursing universities in Japan.
Method
Syllabi publicly available on the websites of nursing universities in Japan were searched. Data of providing disaster nursing courses, course classifications, credits, target academic years, lesson hours or durations, and evaluation methods were collected and tabulated for courses offered in the 2022 academic year. Textual data from details of course objectives and lesson plans were analyzed using the KH Coder for quantitative text analysis.
Results
Among 295 programs analyzed, 191 programs provided disaster nursing courses, mostly designed for 4th year students with 1 credit-15 hours. Nine groups of course objectives and five of lesson plans formed co-occurrence networks, showing that conceptual relations tended to be taught in relation to each other.
Conclusions
The number of disaster nursing courses is increasing. However, class hours for exercises and practice, and the instruction for the preparatory and chronic phases of disaster were insufficient. These issues offer suggestions for future curriculum and course design improvements.
