眼瞼癌は，頭頸部の皮膚癌のおよそ10％を占める比較的珍しい悪性腫瘍であるが，近年増加傾向にある^1）2）。その組織型は，欧米では基底細胞癌の頻度がほぼ90％と大部分を占め，以下，扁平上皮癌，脂腺癌，メルケル細胞癌の順に多い^3-5）。一方，アジアの国々では，脂腺癌と扁平上皮癌の割合が高く，日本では，脂腺癌が眼瞼癌全体の約27％，扁平上皮癌が約22％を占めるとの報告がある^6）。

Radiation therapy is perfomed for inoperable patients with eyelid cancer. Although it is effective for local control of eyelid cancer, it frequently causes radiation-induced toxicities such as keratitis and cataract formation. In this study, an eye shield effectively prevented these toxicities, and visual function of all patients was well preserved. Use of an eye shield is strongly recommended to decrease the incidence of toxicities and preserve visual function.
