The two main types of radiotherapy used for prostate cancer are external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy(IMRT)can achieve highly conformal dose shapes with improved target coverage and sparing of normal tissues compared with conventional radiotherapy techniques. Image-guided radiotherapy(IGRT)is the use of imaging during radiotherapy to improve the precision and accuracy of treatment delivery. Brachytherapy is a type of radiotherapy in which a radioactive source is placed directly into or next to a tissue with a cancer in it. Low-dose-rate(LDR)brachytherapy or seed implant involves the insertion of permanent radioactive sources directly into the prostate.
