近年，放射線治療の領域では，コンピュータ技術，治療機器の進歩による技術革新が著しい。外部照射の領域では，X線透視を用いた二次元的な照射法から，CTを用いた三次元治療計画を用いた照射法に移行し，高精度技術を駆使した放射線治療が日常診療として多くの施設で実施されている。小線源治療は組織内に線源を挿入することにより，前立腺内へ高線量が投与され局所制御を高めることが期待されている。そして，2018年4月から粒子線治療も保険適用となり，利用拡大に弾みがついている。

The two main types of radiotherapy used for prostate cancer are external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy（IMRT）can achieve highly conformal dose shapes with improved target coverage and sparing of normal tissues compared with conventional radiotherapy techniques. Image-guided radiotherapy（IGRT）is the use of imaging during radiotherapy to improve the precision and accuracy of treatment delivery. Brachytherapy is a type of radiotherapy in which a radioactive source is placed directly into or next to a tissue with a cancer in it. Low-dose-rate（LDR）brachytherapy or seed implant involves the insertion of permanent radioactive sources directly into the prostate.
