新型コロナウイルス（SARS-CoV-2）に罹患した患者の一部が重度の肺炎を発症し，酸素療法および侵襲的人工呼吸器管理を含めた呼吸療法を要することから，医療を逼迫し世界的な社会的問題となっている。SARS-CoV-2によって惹起された免疫炎症性反応を抑制することが，新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）において重要な治療法であることがわかってきている。それと同時に免疫炎症性反応が治るまで患者の肺を傷害しない適切な酸素・呼吸療法を行うことが我々に求められている。これまでCOVID-19ではない呼吸不全で蓄積されてきた酸素・呼吸療法における生理学とエビデンスを，COVID-19患者に適切に応用することが重要である。

Some patients with COVID-19 infections develop severe pneumonia and require oxygen and respiratory therapy, including mechanical ventilation, contributing to stress on the medical system and a global social problem. Suppressing the immunoinflammatory response induced by SARS-CoV-2 has been found to be an important treatment for patients with COVID-19 infections. At the same time, we are required to provide appropriate oxygen and respiratory therapy that does not damage the patient's lungs until the immunoinflammatory response is cured. It is important to appropriately apply physiologic knowledge and evidence for oxygen and respiratory therapy that has been accumulated in patients with respiratory failure due to causes other than COVID-19.
