　Because of the miracles wrought through science, the hungry and forlorn in underdeveloped countries have been brought to turn their eyes to that seemingly all powerful dimension of advanced human endeavor, science, for their salvation.

　At the same time, those who live in technologically advanced nations often bemoan the advance of science at the sacrifice of human worth and the quality of life. Clearly, the search for a more integrated scientific understanding which harmonizes empirical knowledge with a standard of value is of critical importance to the well being of each man.
