  • Abstract

Congratulations to the Japanese Nursing Ethics Association and its journal. The Association and the journal come at an important time in nursing, when the profession faces the challenges of a globalised health care market, and also a huge labour shortage. Not only are changes in practice forcing nurses to reconsider many of their positions, but advances in technology put basic personal and professional values to the test. Some age-old values, such as compassion and dignity, are universal when faced with suffering, but how they are interpreted has increasingly to be re-considered. Governments and institutions are concerned with patient safety, in order to reduce care costs, yet nurses may be more concerned with personal relationships, on which to base their care. ‘Relationship work’ takes time, and governments worry about money being spent on ‘nice’ things like the need for comfort, the personal touch, tears shed with patients. Can a compromise be reached and both aspects be honoured, and if so, how?
