緒言
幼児の言語障害を診断するためには，正常児の言語の発達状態を正しく知つておく必要があるしまたある個人の成長という歴史において，いつ頃から言語を意志の交換や，感情表現の手段として使い始めるかを知ることは興味がある。
幼児の言語の発達に関しては心理学者らの手によつて19世紀の始めより研究が行われてきた。日本でも沢柳，久保，森脇，牛島，松本，大脇らの報告があるが，その調査の対象児が非常に少数で一般的でないもの，学童期になつてから調査を始めたもの，調査が主として心理学的立場からなされたものなどで，言語障害をもつ幼児を医学的に取り扱う場合に参考とするには，不充分で，かつ不便を感ずることが多い。そこで我々は，幼児の正常な言語発達の調査を試みた。
One hundred and thirty infants were closely observed for their natural progress of speech development. It was the average of 11.1 month that the first comprehensible word was spo-ken; which precedes the ability to walk. The number of spoken words are gradually incre-ased and at the age of 16 months this increase will make a sudden rapidity. At 18 months most infants will have a vocabulary of 90 to 100 words and are capable of combining 2 wo-rds together.
