  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Goto and Matsuzaki conducted sensitivity te-sts of bacterial organisms, which were obtained from ear discharges and pus of operative wou-nds, against various antibiotic agents by use of methods of dilutions and of sensitivity tablets. The antibiotics consisted of penicillin, colistin, dihydrostreptomycin. aureomycin and chloromy-cetin.

1. A notable number of growths of bacteria isolated from the ear discharge proved to be purely gram-negative but, in majority of cases the causative factor appeared to be a mixed infection. The organisms appeared to be the most sensative towards chloromy- cetin followed by aureomycin, dihydrostre- ptomycin, colistin and penicillin in descen- ding order of sensativity.

2. Bacterial yrganisms isolated from wounds proved to be in majority of cases gram- negative and the sensitivity tests on these were similar to the order described above.

3. Indilution tests with identical degree of concentration of antibiotics used for estab- lishing bacteriostasis, this reaction appeared to be more markedly emphasized with 24 hour culture than the 12. This difference in reaction may be explained by the fact that the organism may have acquired resis- tance to the agent in the meantime.

4. By use of sensitivity tablets the results ob- tained seemed to be more pronounced than that noted by dilution method but sudh re- sults should not be used for clinical inter- pretation without further investigation.
