  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Muller cells are the predominant glial element in the retina, and they carry out many of the functions provided by astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and ependymal cells elsewhere in the central nervous system. Muller cells span the entire thickness of the retina and contact all retinal neurons, which support the functional interactions between retinal neurons and Muller cells. In fact, a reactive Muller cell gliosis is associated with most retinal diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and various forms of photoreceptor degeneration.
