  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Neurotrophins and their receptors are localized in numerous visual centers including retina. Neurotrophins influence proliferation, neurite outgrowth, and survival of cells in the visual system. For example, neurotrophins have strong anti-apoptotic activity in retinal neurons. They increase the survival of retinal ganglion cells after injury, and rescue photoreceptors in both the inherited and light-induced retinal degeneration. Control of cell survival by neurotrophins is mediated by two types of transmembrane glycoproteins, the trk tyrosine kinase receptors (trkA, trkB and trkC) and the neurotrophin receptor p75 (p75NTR).
