Human herpesvirus（HHV）-6,7は，いずれも乳児期から幼児期早期に初感染し突発性発疹症を起こす。ヒトに感染する8種類のヘルペス群ウイルス中，6,7番目に発見された比較的新しいウイルスであり，cytomegalovirusと同じβヘルペス亜科に属する。これまでに初感染時神経系合併症の報告や，成人での神経感染症への関与を示唆する報告がある。とくにHHV-6に関しては，様々な神経系細胞，血管内皮細胞への感染がin vitroで証明されており，神経系感染症の起因病原体として注目されている。

Human herpesvirus (HHV) 6 and 7 are the causes of common childhood febrile disease, exanthem subitum. Both of these 2 viruses were isolated from humans recently, and are closely related to human cytomegalovirus. Thus, HHV-6 and 7 were classified within the beta subgroup of human herpesviruses. It was demonstrated that HHV-6 has neurotropism in vitro. It is suggested that primary infection of these 2 viruses can cause complications of central nervous system (CNS) including febrile seizures and encephalitis/encephalopathy.
