はじめに

　歯根膜にある機械受容器（periodontal mechanoreceptors）は，われわれが，日常の食物を咀嚼する時の「歯ごたえ」の感覚をつくると同時に，咀嚼運動を調節するための感覚情報を送る装置となっている^9,15）。歯根膜機械受容器から発した感覚情報の主な中枢投射経路は三叉神経の感覚枝である歯槽神経を一次求心性神経として三叉神経核に投射し，さらに視床後内側腹側核（VPM核）を経て大脳皮質体性感覚野に投射される^5,13）。われわれはここで，この歯根膜機械受容器により出発した感覚情報が中枢神経系の各段階でどのように処理されていくかをネコを用いた著者らの研究を中心として解説してみたい。

We have investigated the response properties of the periodontal mechanosensitive (PM) units recorded from the neurons in the primary afferents, trigeminal sensory nuclei, thalamic nucleus and somatosensory cortex in the cat. The response properties of the PM units, i.e., adaptation rate and directional selectivity to tooth stimulation, response field, size and laterality of the receptive field, changed progressively at each level of the central nervous system (CNS). The prominent changes occurred in the stage of the thalamus. We discussed how response properties of the PM units had changed on the respective levels of the CNS.
