  • Look Inside

The tooth pulp and periodontal membrane are abundantly innervated by sensory and sympathetic nerves. Pathophysiological and morphological studies on nerve changes after traumatic injury or surgery have revealed the degeneration and regeneration of nerves. The reinnervation of the tooth, oral mucous membrane and skin has been investigated in the cat and rat following pulpectomy, tooth extraction, and section or crush of the inferior alveolar nerve. Those studies have provided evidence for the regeneration of sectioned nerve fibers and for the collateral sprouting of unsectioned nerve fibers supply-ing adjacent tissues.
