　緒言

　扁桃被膜外，咽頭収縮筋あるいは咽頭腱膜内の疎性な扁桃周囲組織に発生し，咽頭痛・嚥下痛・開口障害・発熱など激しい臨床症状を呈し，罹患者にかなりの肉体的精神的苦痛をもたらす扁桃周囲膿瘍は，種々の抗生物質の発達した現在においても臨床上しばしば遭遇する疾患である。最近7年間に当科で経験した扁桃周囲膿瘍を対象として臨床像について統計的検討を加えたので報告する。

Seventy-three patients with peritonsillar abscess were observed for 7 years from 1986 to 1992, and the findings were statistically analyzed.

1) The highest incidence was found in the patients in the 30s or about 70% of all patients, followed by the 20s and 40s.

2) The onset-treatment interval was 12.7 days in the patients received incision and drainage, and 9.8days in the patients received paracentesis and aspi-ration. The onset treatment interval was clearly short in the paracentesis group.

3) Tonsillectomy was performed in 19 out of 55 patients with incipient peritonsillar abscess (34.5%) and 11 of 18 patients (61.1%) with relaps.

4) We have suggested that the patients with peritonsillar abscess in the age bands of 20 s to 40 s should undergo actively tonsillectomy because many recurrence occurred in these age bands by study of our series and accumulated literatures.
