Abstract Purpose:In ophthalmology, visual acuity worse than 0.01 is limited to non-quantitative evaluations such as “counting fingers”, “hand motion”, “light perception”, and “no light perception”.

We aimed to clarify the range that can be quantified using the Berkeley Rudimentary Vision Test(BRVT), which makes it possible to convert the visual acuity below the counting fingers, and which is difficult to quantify, into a logMAR value.

Subjects and Methods:In the conventional visual acuity test, 87 eyes(counting fingers:21 eyes, hand motion:56 eyes, light perception:10 eyes)of 63 patients who excluding eyes “no light perception”, we evaluated visual acuity by BRVT and visual field performed using a Goldmann perimeter(GP).

Results:Of 87 eyes, 50 eyes could be quantified by BRVT, and all 50 eyes that could be quantified could be measured by GPⅤ/4e visual field.

Conclusion:Low visual acuity that could not be measured with the Landolt ring could be quantitatively evaluated by using BRVT, including visual functions that allowed the visual recognition of GPⅤ/4e targets.
