Abstract Background:According to Service and Support for Persons with Disabilities Act, contact lens is supplied as a prosthetic device for visually impaired persons. Actually, the system seems not to be working since contact lens is rarely prescribed.

Purpose:To report the current status of contact lens used as prosthetic device by visually impaired persons as stipulated by law.

Method:A questionnaire was sent to 475 ophthalmologists who completed the judgement and application of prosthetic devices course for ophthalmologists. Another questionnaire was sent to 6 manufacturers of hard contact lenses.

Results:Response was obtained from 97 ophthalmologists and 4 manufacturers. Contact lens was being supplied to 37 persons by 23 ophthalmologists. The cases comprised 10 with keratoconus, 8 with aniridia, and 19 others. Insufficient awareness by ophthalmologists was felt the major problem and was mentioned by 72 out of 97 responders(74%). According to the view by manufacturers, the duration of service life of contact lens was too long and the official procedure was too complex.

Conclusion:The current status of contact lens as prosthetic device by visually impaired persons ought to be improved in order to meet the actual needs of prospective users.
