Abstract Purpose:We quantitatively evaluated the effects of head movements on reading with the Eyeglass Type Wearable Sensor JINS MEME Academic Pack(JINS Inc., hereinafter WS).

Subjects and methods:Subjects were 10 healthy individuals(22.4±2.4 years old) with spherical power ranging from −5.75D to+5.75D, with a cylindrical power less than −2.25D, and no abnormalities in eye position, eye movement, or vestibular function. The WS was set to a sampling frequency of 100 Hz, an angular velocity range of 250 dps, and a 16-bit resolution. The test text was A4 horizontally, writing 10.5 pt with a line length of 150 mm. Reading speed(characters/minute) was measured with right eye monocular vision, with and without head position control, along with head movement in the vertical(pitch), tilt(roll), and horizontal(yaw) directions. Head movement was converted to angular data by integrating the angular velocity, and the total change over 1 min was calculated. Reading speed and head movement per character(angle/character) were compared and analyzed.

Results:The mean corrected near visual acuity was 0.00±0.00 logMAR. The reading speed did not differ with or without head position control. The head movement per character increased significantly under natural conditions(p<0.001). No correlation was found between the reading speed and head movement per character.

Conclusion:WS allowed quantitative assessment even with minimal head movement. Although head movement per character increased under the natural head position in young healthy subjects, this did not affect the reading speed.
