The probable visual acuity after cataract surgery can be estimated, presurgically, with the use of laser interferometer (Retinometer) or of potential acuity meter (PAM) which projects various opto-types onto the fundus. We evaluated a series of 66 eyes operated for cataract. We compared the pre-dicted visual acuity levels measured by laser interfero-meter and PAM with the actual postsurgical visual acuity measured with Landolt rings.
Out of the present series of 66 eyes, presurgical estimation of visual acuity was possible in 34 eyes by laser interferometer and in 30 eyes by PAM. A total of 39 eyes could be evaluated by either of the methods. PAM measurement was more difficult to perform in denser and more diffuse opacity as in mature cataract. The predicted visual acuity showed higher correlation with the actual postsurgical one when measured by PAM than laser interferometer.
