I．まえがき

　Insulinの発見されるまで，糖尿病になつた患者の平均余命は数年にすぎなかつたが，Insulin療法が導入されていらい，糖尿病患者の寿命がしだいにのびてきた。しかし，糖尿病は完全治癒をのぞむことがむずかしい疾患であるから，ながくわずらつているあいだにいろんな合併症が発生してくる。

　事実，昏睡死をきたすものは非常に減つたが，糖尿病の合併症はむしろ増えてきている（第1表）^1）。すなわち，1900年のNaunyn時代には糖尿病昏睡で死亡したものが64％あつたがが，Ba—ntigがInsulinを発見してからのちは，著明にへり，8.3％となり，さらに1945年以降には1.8％となつている。これに対して，動脈硬化症の合併による死亡率は，しだいに増え，1945年には70％にたつしている。

The prognosis of cataract operation in cases of diabetes was by no means a happy one. Recently, in Japan also there has been increased in the incidence of diabetes and in life-expectancy of diabetics. Those facts may result in an increase in cases with not only dia-betic cataract but also senile cataract in diabetics, and there will be more frequent occasion dealing with cataract operation in diabetics. In such cases following consideration should be taken : (1) bleeding, (2) postoperative infection, and (3) delay of re-establishment of the anterior chamber.
