抗生物質療法の進歩は昨今に至つても，ますます目覚ましいものがあり，新抗生物質が次々と治療界に登場しつゝある。この中エリスロマイシン類似抗生物質として先に秦氏等によりロイコマイシンが得られ，次いでフランスではスピラマイシンが，アメリカではノボビオシン，オレアンドマイシン（以下OLM）が発見せられた。
OLMはStreptomyces antibioticusの一菌株より分離された抗生物質で，その抗菌スペクトルはグラム陽性菌及び陰性菌の中のナイセリア（淋菌），インフルエンザ菌，百日咳菌等に作用し，リケツチア，大型ビールス，原虫にも有効とされる。
In order to investigate the penetration of Oleandomycin (OLM) of normal rabbit eyes, the following modes of administration were employed:
(a) oral administration:500mg
(b) topical application:
OLM in solution of 5 mg/ml was instilled into the lower conjunctival cul de sac every 5 minutes for 20 minutes.
(c) subconjunctival injection : 2.5 mg/0.5 ml.
Concentration of OLM in the aqueous following oral administration was detected at 3.51 to 7.60 mcg/ml.
