  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

This clinical research was performed to investigate the effect of Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) on 88 cases of neurosis and 31 cases of other mental illness. In almost all cases, 30-60mg, of Librium was administrated orally 3-4 times daily.

Results obtained were as follows:

1) Some differences in the clinical effect were confirmed between neurosis and other mental illness accompanied with anxiety and tension. That is, in the former we could find excellent improvedcases in 18% marked improved cases in 34% and moderately improved cases in 22%. On the contrary, in the later, we could find excellent imrpoved cases in 10%, marked improved cases in 23% and moderately improved cases in 25%.

2) The most remarkable effect was seen in anxiety neurosis. Hypochondriasis and obsessive-compulsive neurosis showed al-so the favorable effect coming after an-xiety neurosis.

3) Anxiety, tension feeling, fear, depressive feeling, palpitation and chest pressure responded markedly to Librium. We could not notice any difference of these effects between each disease types.

4) We could not expect any further impro-vement when we had achieved few fa-vorable result within 14 days of Librium administration. If we could notice certain favorable effect within these days, we should continue the prescription until fur-ther 3 months.

5) On some occasions we experienced those cases which became worse again after drug interruption of 7 days in the im-proved condition.

6) Side reactions were noticed in 58.8% of all cases, but there was no serious one. Chief side reactions were drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, heavy head and poor appetite. They used to appear within 3-7 days from beginning of drug administra-tion.
