For purposes of investigating seasonal chan-ges in serum protein, we performed native, denaturation and filtrate tests by polarography and examined protein, glycoprotein and lipo-protein fractions in every season by filterpaper electrophoresis in 56 normal subjects and 61 cases of old schizophrenia.

The following results were obtained:

1) The amplitude of a polarographic native wave showed a definite decrease in both nor-mal and schizophrenic groups in winter. The amplitude of a denaturation wave tended to decrease in both groups in winter, whereas it had a tendency to increase somewhat in spring. In a normal groups tendency toward a greater increase of the amplitude of the denaturation wave in the spring was observed than in the schizophrenic group. Accordingly lowered SH-group activities were recognized in winter in both groups.

2) In the filtrate test both normal and schizophrenic groups exhibited tendencies to-ward an increased aplitude of the wave in spring. Especially in the normal group this increase was apparently greater than in win-ters. The schizophrenic group, when com-pared with the normal group, showed the greater tendency of filtrate wave amplitude in each season. Therefore the high tendency of the activity of the SH-group in mucoprotein was observed in both groups.

3) Speaking of changes in protein fractions studied by electrophoresis, both normal and schizophrenic groups showed an increase in the albumin fraction in summer. In summer there was a decrease in α2-, β- and γ- globulin fractions in the normal group and the γ- globulin fraction it the schizophrenic group. The normal group exhibited a slight increase in the α1- globulin fraction. The albumin fraction in the normal group tended to be greater in every season than in the schizophrenic group, whereas the β- and γ- globulin fractions had a tendency to be greater in tne schizophrenic, than in the normal group.

4) Concerning glycoprotein, both normal and schizophrenic groups showed a decrease in the albumin fraction in winter. In the nor-mal group there was an increase in the γ-globulin fraction in winter. In each season the β- globulin fraction in the schizophrenic group tended to be greater than in the normal group.

5) No significant seasonal changes were seen in lipoprotein fractions.

6) Emphasis was placed on the fact that these seasonal changes are finidings that should be considered in prolonged studies, and the mechanisms responsible for these changes were discussed.
