　近年，肺がプロスタグランディン（以下PGと略す）をはじめとする種々のvasoactive substanceの代謝をおこない，ガス交換をおこなう臓器であると同時に一種のmetabolic organであるとする考え方が有力となってきた。

　また最近PGの炎症における役割が注目され，PGE₁による体温上昇作用，血管透過性増加作用，leukotaxis促進作用，またPGE₁, PGF₂αによるcollagen産生作用などが明らかにされてきた^1）。

The possibility that the prostaglandins can act as mediators in the inflammatory response has been suggested by a number of researchers.

The present investigation, therefore, was designed to study the distribution of prostaglandins of the E and F type in serum and pleural exudate from patients with pleuritis.

Eighteen patients with carcinomatous pleuritis, 3 with tuberculous pleuritis, 4 with pleuritis of unknown etiology were studied. Test samples were obtained before breakfast and kept at -80℃ until use.
