ビタミンD依存症には，活性型ビタミンDの生合成過程の異常によるビタミンＤ依存性くる病1型と，活性型ビタミンＤ受容体機能の異常によるビタミンＤ依存性くる病2型がある。いずれも原因遺伝子が判明しているが，症状の多様性や，遺伝形式の多様性があることがわかってきた。どちらも稀な疾患であり，特に２型の治療法は遺伝子型や症例により異なるため，遺伝子解析を含めた正確な診断が必要である。
Vitamin D dependency is classified to vitamin D-dependent rickets type 1 which shows defective 1,25（OH）2D production, and vitamin D-dependent rickets type 2 which shows end-organ unresponsiveness to 1,25（OH）2D. Recent advance in the molecular analysis of these diseases revealed variety in the presentation and in the inheritance patterns. Molecular diagnosis would be preferable for adequate therapy especially in type 2.
