Bone and soft tissue sarcomas

原発性悪性骨軟部腫瘍（肉腫）は，年間に発生する全悪性腫瘍の1％未満という非常にまれな腫瘍である^1）。根治的治療の第一選択は外科的切除であるが，部位によっては困難なことも多い（頭蓋底，脊椎，骨盤部など）。切除不能例または不完全切除例に対する選択肢の一つが放射線治療であるが，従来の放射線治療（X線治療）は，単独では骨軟部肉腫に対する効果は不十分と考えられており，主として術前照射または術後照射として用いられてきた^2）3）。

Bone and soft tissue sarcomas（BSTSs）are extremely rare and the primary definitive treatment is surgical resection. However, BSTSs of the skull base, spine, pelvis, etc. are often difficult to resect completely. Recent studies have indicated that particle therapy, such as carbon ion therapy（CIT）and proton therapy（PT）, is useful for treating BSTSs. Retrospective nationwide multicenter studies in Japan and systematic reviews demonstrated the efficacy and safety of CIT and PT for BSTSs. As a result, both CIT and PT for BSTSs have been covered by the public health insurance in Japan.
