Abstract

Bereavement comes suddenly in a disaster, and it is often that the grief of bereaved families does not follow a normal process, but becomes complex due to a variety of other factors. We feel that providing care in view of grief care is essential in the phase immediately after a disaster strike. The Japanese Society for Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT)was established in autumn 2006, for the purpose of dealing with many of the problems faced by bereaved families and the treatment of corpses right after the disaster, a lesson learned in the JR Fukuchiyama Line train derailment in western Japan(April, 2005). The society has about 260 registered members, mainly disaster medical staff persons in Japan. Their main purposes are 1)team activity in support of bereaved families at the disaster site, 2)networking for long-term support of bereaved families, and 3)enlightenment and training activities about black tag cases in triage and grief care.
