Speech-language-hearing therapists (SLHTs) working in the community collaborate with various stakeholders in the community to address communication and eating challenges. The expertise in community speech-language-hearing therapy is not limited to the provision of individual support to people with disabilities. The way in which SLHTs tackle community issues was examined from practical examples including the Community Rehabilitation Activity Support Project in Hachioji City, Tokyo, and the Communication Support Project for people with aphasia. The knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed in the community were extracted from interviews with SLHTs working in the community. In order for SLHTs to be active in the community and to be involved in community development, it is necessary for them to respond to a wide range of community needs from a micro to mezzo and macro levels, through multi-professional and multi-agency collaboration.
