The intracellular pH is lower than the extracellular pH and is influenced by the acid (H) that is constantly produced in the cell, but the intracellular pH can be maintained at a constant value by multiple mechanisms. However, extreme regulation of intracellular or extracellular pH disrupts these regulatory mechanisms and damages the cells. As a treatment to raise intracellular pH, administration of sodium bicarbonate may worsen the intracellular environment. On the other hand, THAM is expected to avoid deterioration of intracellular acidosis, but the evidence is insufficient to be clinically applicable.
