The partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) determined by blood gas analysis is the gold standard to evaluate arterial oxygenation, although the analysis of PaO2 is invasive and performed intermittently. Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive and continuous method to monitor arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). For the optimal use of these monitors, we need to understand the measurement principles and recognize factors which potentially affect the accuracy and precision of these measurements. This review article consists of three parts:i) Indices of oxygenation such as PaO2/ FIO2 ratio, oxygenation index, oxygen saturation index, and SpO2/ FIO2 ratio;ii) Pulse oximetry and principles of its measurement;and iii) arterial blood gas analysis. Considering the lack of awareness of the relationship between blood gas analysis and body temperature by healthcare providers, we discuss the alpha-stat strategy and the pH-stat strategy in the management of pH.
