The primary purpose of rehabilitation in the intensive care unit (ICU) is to improve quality of life by restoring, maintaining, and improving the ability to perform activities of daily life. The definition of “early” in early rehabilitation usually refers to intensive rehabilitation implemented with regular care at a certain time during the ICU stay. No clear clinical evidence has shown that initiation of intensive physical rehabilitation during the ICU stay contributes to the alleviation of ICU-acquired weakness or delirium, which leads to postintensive care syndrome. Intensive physical intervention may be beneficial when applied as a component of the ABCDEF bundle, as part of comprehensive ICU care. Physical rehabilitation may not only improve physical function and ability to perform activities of daily life, but also decrease the length of ICU and hospital stay. Although the incidence of adverse events caused by early physical rehabilitation is low, various barriers to the implementation of physical rehabilitation exist.
