With recent medical advances, the number of survivors of critical illness is increasing, and postintensive care syndrome (PICS) is a growing concern in public health. PICS is defined as a new or worsening impairment in cognition, mental health and physical function after critical illness. Early rehabilitation may be effective to prevent PICS. While there is accumulating evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of early rehabilitation in the intensive care unit, demonstrating the effectiveness of early rehabilitation to prevent PICS awaits further investigation. This article reviews and discusses early rehabilitation in the intensive care unit with respect to the prevention of PICS.
