◆Abstract◆
For the past several decades, there has been a dramatic increase in nursing research. The current challenge is to translate this research to real time practice and to use the data from real time practice to inform research. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing (UWM CON) has a long history of strengthening the research-practice bond in the community, hospital, home and long term care. A summary of several CON activities as well as the newest initiative, the Knowledge Based Nursing Initiative (KBNI), are described in the article. To address gaps in the science, and based on decades of foundational work, a college of nursing, a large integrated health system and a health information system corporation joined forces in 2004 to create the Knowledge Based Nursing Initiative (KBNI). The KBNI is designed to develop and test a process to synthesize nursing research into actionable knowledge ; to design, build and implement an electronic decision support system for nurses at the point of care ; to collect and analyze clinical data ; construct reports for quality improvement and provide feedback to multiple stakeholders. In addition to bringing the best research evidence to practice, the KBNI is designed to systematically code, organize, and store nursing practice data in a clinical repository that provides the researchers the opportunity to use valid and reliable practice data for further research.
