幹細胞は，分化した体細胞を供給すると同時に，自分自身を産生する自己複製の能力を兼ね備えた細胞である．癌組織においても，幹細胞様の細胞を頂点とした階層構造が存在するという“癌幹細胞説”が提唱されている．癌の階層構造に関しては様々な議論があるが，癌の起源細胞と幹細胞との関係や悪性進展における幹細胞特性(ステムネス)の獲得など，広義の癌幹細胞研究は，癌の本態解明に向けた新たなアプローチとして期待されている．癌ステムネスを支える分子基盤の解明は，新規癌診断・治療法を開発するための重要な鍵となる．

Stem cells are defined by their ability to both produce stem cells, a property known as self-renewal, and to give rise to differentiated progeny.　Recent studies have proposed an idea that cancer tissues consist of a stem cell hierarchy.　Cancer stem cell research includes several important issues regarding the relationship between cancer and stem cells and provides novel aspects in cancer biology.　Understanding molecular mechanisms for supporting "stemness" would contribute to the establishment of novel diagnostics or therapeutics for cancer.
