Recently, leukemias and other cancers have been suspected to contain a subpopulation of cells that display characteristics of stem cells and maintain tumor growth. Hematological malignancies including leukemia are regarded as adequate models for cancer stem cells. Identification of target cells for the origin of leukemic stem cells and comparison of gene expression profiles and cell-surface-marker profiles between the normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and leukemic stem cells make it possible to differentiate the hematopoietic stem cells from leukemic stem cells. This discovery urged us to develop the target therapy for leukemic stem cells. Similarly, cancer stem cells for solid tumor have been identified by the cell surface markers and the side population (SP) cell fraction capable of efficient Hoechst dye efflux. It is necessary to develop the target therapy for cancer stem cells to eliminate the cancer because they are resistant to the various anti-cancer drugs that are used and also to radiation.
