  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

It is generally accepted that sialolithiasis of the parotid gland is relatively rare. The authors have recently encountered two cases of this disease.

The components of salivary calculi in these two cases and in 21 cases of sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland which we encountered in the past two years were analyzed by i nfrared spectrometry by means of a Hitachi 260-30 infrared spectrometer.

Salivary stones in both the parotid and submandibular glands were mainly composed of calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, and protein.

Salivary stones in the parotid gland tended to contain slightly large amounts of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate and a small amount of protein than salivary stones in the submandibular gland.
