  • Look Inside

Fifty cases of thyroglossal cysts and 23 cases of branchial cleft cysts were surgically treated in the last 11 years. The distinctive features of these two cystic diseases were as follows.

1) Thyroglossal cysts : Sex preponderance of the male to female was 29 : 21. Eighty percents of the cysts located inferiorly to the hyoid bone in the middle neck.

According to the comparison of the group treated with Sistrunk method (removal of the hyoid bone) and the group without, the relapse ratio was lower in the latter, also the functional disturbance by removal of the hyoid bone had never been reported. So the authors conclude that Sistrunk method should be performed for our routine use.

2) Branchial cleft cysts : The male and female ratio was 14 : 9, and the left and right ratio was 14 : 9. In Bailey's classification, type II was the most common.
