  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has now been generally accepted as the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis (IM), and serological or nuclear biologic studies have also shown the association of the virus with Burkitt lymphoma (BL) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the oncogenic potential of this virus, its specific role in the induction of human tumors is not yet fully understood. We reviewed herein the recent findings in NPC research, for instance, cells of EBV replication in the oropharynx, host factors as a target cell conditioning for the pathogenesis of EBV infection, and mechanism of EBV-genome transfer to epithelial cells by cell fusion or superinfection of EBV. We also mentioned about some promoting effects in NPC and possible association with C-type virus in the particular relation to EBV.
