  • Look Inside

A 28-year-old man, who has actively surfed for five years, had a symptom of feeling of fullness in the right ear. Otoscopic examination demonstrated an exostosis of the external auditory canal almost obstructing the canal in the right ear and moderately in the left. The bony lesion in the right was removed and examined histologically. A scar tissue with woven bone formation following chronic inflammation, which might have been caused by frequent stimulation of cold water for a long time, was observed. As the degree of exostosis in surfers is severer than that in swimmers or divers, we tentatively call it "surfer's ear" as Seftel (1977) has named previously.
