  • Look Inside

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare, mlignant tumor, arising from the olfactory mucosa.

The purpose of this paper is to report our cases in addition to 188 cases reported in the literature and to report the successful and first trial of transplantation of olfactory neuroblastoma to nude mice.

Case 1 A 68-year-old man developed bilateral nasal obstruction and a mass in the nasal cavity was found. Biopsy of the nasal mass revealed olfactory neuroblastoma.

A complete remission was obtained with radio-therapy. There is no evidence of recurrence of tumor for more than four years after completion of irradiation.

Case 2 A 68-year-old man with episodes of epistaxis was diagnosed as having malignant tumor of the nose. He was treated with preoperative irradiation followed by surgery, but he died two years after the first treatment.

Pathological investigation revealed olfactory neuroblastoma. Transplantation of tumor tissue into mude mice was successful.

It is our conclusion that combined therapy with preoperative irradiation followed by resection of tumor with radical neck dissection is the most suitable treatment for this lesion.
