  • Look Inside

Morphological observation on salivary calculi was carried out by means of scanning electron microscope and ordinary light microscope. The salivary calculi were found to be formed by mixture of organic and inorganic substances. However, there was no regular pattern for the growth of thestones, as the thickness and the arrangement of the laminal components were not uniform. There was no inert foreign body or microorganism found in the calculi.

There were two modes in the formation of colculous nucleus; one was the nucleus which was maturated from a primitive core and, the other was the nucleus that was formed from the beginning of the stone formation in a homogenous mineral mass. The x-ray microanalysis showed that most salivary calculi contained chemical elements such as calcium, phosphor, potassium, sodium, magnesium, chlorine, sulpher, manganese, chromium and aluminum.
