In order to evaluate the efficacy of middle ear surgery (tympanoplasty), a comparison was made of the pre- and post-operative incidence of various subjective symptoms in patients with chronic otitis media. One hundred and eight patients (36 cases of cholesteatomatous otitis media and 72 cases of chronic purulent otitis media) were examined in terms of the symptoms of hearing loss, tinnitus, heaviness of the head and dizziness.

Following surgical intervention in the middle ear, 69% of cases showed an improvement in hearing, 79% were reduced in tinnitus, 90% decreased in head-heaviness and 87% were indicated in a reduction of dizziness. However, a few patients (8%) complained of an onset of slight and intermittant tinnitus and also 7% of the patients noted an increase in their hearing loss.

The results of this analysis supports the usefulness of tympanoplasty.
