  • Look Inside

 For ossicular chain reconstruction following decompression of the horizontal portion of the facial nerve the use of the malleus-stapes assembly method has some degrees of merit;

 (1) It enable to gain a wide-field of operation for the purpose.

 (2) It does not interfere aeration of the epitympanum and thereby, aids to avoid the danger of adhesions forming on the walls of the middle ear.

 (3) The assembly will remain stable without impairing the hearing because the prosthesis is not likely to be drawn away from the stapes.

 (4) The procedure is also recommendable in the ossicular reconstruction during decompression of the nerve in facial paralysis following skull fractures or suppurative otitis media.

 The authors used in these assembly prothesis malleus head in 3 cases and incus body in 4 cases and gained a satisfactory hearing; the boneair hearing gap was 5 dB or less at the end of 6-months postoperatively.
