  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Four cases of papillomas of the nasal cavities and nasal sinuses that had been seen at the ENT Department of the Hiroshima University Medical School for the recent 10 years are reported. The results are as follow:

The ages of the patients ranged from 41 to 50 years. Two exophytic papillomas were found in female patients and inverted papilloma were found in 2 male patients.

The incidence rate of papilloma, in this clinic during the period of time observed, was 2.2% as compared to all other nasal and paranasal neoplasms.

Microscopic examination revealed that these growths were composed of, either, stratified epithelial layers consisting of squamous cells, exophytic papilloma, or, of transitional cells, inverted papilloma. The neoplastic epithelium of the inverted papillomas were both found to be invading the underlying stroma instead of proliferating outward from the surface as were characteric in the two exophytic ones.

One case of the inverted papilloma suggested a precancerous stage because of epithelial atypia and irregularity of the cells.

Following a complete removal of the growth by Caldwell-Luc operation, all 4 cases are free from recurrence from 7 months to three and half years after the operation.
