  • Look Inside

A case of phlebolith of the cheek is reported. A woman, aged 22, complained of swelling and pain of the left cheek for the period of past 11 years. Examination showed a few nodules the size of a pea palpable in the cheek; salivary calculi of the parotid gland was initially suspected. However, sialographic examination of the parotid was negative. The diagnosis of phlebolith of the cheek was made.

The operation revealed 5 pedunculated phleboliths in the dilated veins of the masseter muscles. Histological the mass was composed of onionlike structure of calcification with partial bone formation, the venous wall appeared to be dilated around the calculi.

During the period of 41 years from 1930 to 1971, 16 cases of facial phleboliths have been reported. Only 4 cases among this group were given a correct diagnosis preoperatively.

The authors emphasize the neccessity of considering the presence of facial phleboliths besides salivary calculi in the diagnosis of cases complain of pain and swelling of the cheek.
