  • Look Inside

As there is a gradual loss of hearing with the advancement of age, naturally there might be a similar loss in the sense of smell. If the etiology of the onset of these two manifestations are commonly due to the fact of aging, it could be suspected that the threshold value of these two senses might correspondingly increase on similar basis. In order to find such a common ground a simultaneous study on 72 individuals, whose ages raged from 60 to 84 years, was made.

It was found that the threshold value of both hearing and the sense of smell showed increase with the advancement of age; the rate of increase appeared to be greater for the hearing than that of the smell. However, with the greater increase in the threshold of hearing, the basic threshold for the sense of smell showed an increase likewise.
