Abstract

Certain species of olfactory stimuli such as pheromone and amino acids elicit responses only in the receptors of specific animals. Specific receptor molecules for these type of stimuli must exist in the olfactory receptor membrane. An attempt to isolate receptor molecules for amino acids is made with use of the olfactory epithelium of fishes.

On the other hand, general odorants elicit responses in various non-olfactory cells as well as olfactory cells. For example the odorants elicit impulses in the Jacobson's organ, the trigeminal nerve and the gustatory nerves.
